Another Rainy Day (or not?)
The forecast was for two days of rain. And yesterday did that. We didn’t notice much rain, since we were in our room during most of the rain, but the paper said that some sections of West Oahu, along the coast got 10 inches of rain!
But for today, the forecast scaled back the rain considerably, first to just 11am to 2pm, and then as the day went on to none. So we decided to walk up to the Ala Moana shopping center. We walked to it once before, when we were just getting used to Waikiki.
This time we decide to walk up along the canal. Waikiki is separated from the rest of Honolulu by a canal that, as I remember, was built to help drain the low lands, creating ground to build on. The canal extends parallel to the beach until it gets to Ala Moana and then turns and drains into the harbor.
It took about an hour and a half to walk down and into the mall. The mall has parking on the ground floor and then 3 or 4 levels of shops above that. Mostly high end stores — Neiman Marcus, Nordstroms — but also Target and Macy’s for the big stores. And then just about every luxury store I’ve heard of — from Tiffany to Cartier, from Gucci to Chanel. And lots of other stores.
We walked around a while, and then decided lunch was in order. We walked around Foodland — a grocery store a lot like Whole Foods — but eventually found the Makai Market Food Court. The Food Court was huge and had lots of little stores serving food.
Eventually Linda decided on some ramen and I got some wonton soup.
Then we walked home.
On the way home, I took a picture of a strange pole
I had seen those as we drove around the island and assume they are some form of telecommunications antenna. But a quick Google search says they are sirens. Omnidirectional sirens. For tsunami or other emergencies, put up by the Hawaii Department of Defense (!).
